Mail Truck

As you may have heard, the finalized USPS rule changes for Mailing Currency have been posted and the full release can be reviewed here.

The Highlights:

  • In keeping with the preliminary proposition, there is now a $500 Priority Mail currency maximum.
  • The final rule relaxes the timeline for the implementation from March 1st to April 30th, 2023.
  • USPS also formalized an unexpected addition. They are now forcing a shift from Priority Mail Flat Rate shipping to Priority Mail shipping.

In short, this means that while you can use USPS to transport $500 or less of currency, you cannot use Flat Rate Priority Mail packaging to do it.

To quote the release, after April 30th, "Mailers must not use any USPS-provided packaging ( i.e., expedited packaging supplies) when mailing commercial cash transactions regardless of the amount."

Our Next Steps:

  • In order to adjust our services by the April 30th deadline, DTS Connex development and production release planning is underway to support locations using Variable Rate Priority Mail shipping for EASYPOST ONLY.
  • We're currently looking into options to provide shipping materials through our supply distribution channels.
  • We're supporting transitions to alternative Cash-in-Transit solutions.

Your Next Steps:

  • For locations that cannot effectively operate with the new $500 mailing maximum, select and implement alternative Cash-in-Transit and/or depository solutions. Contact your bank to learn more about alternative solutions.
  • For locations who wish to continue using USPS currency transport and can adhere to the $500 maximum limit, procure and distribute alternative shipping supplies equivalent to the Padded Flat Rate Envelope, approximately 11" x 12.5" Bubble-Lined Poly Mailers. If you need help sourcing these envelopes, please reach out to help@dtsconnex.com.
  • If you are currently using Stamps.com, migrate your label provider to EasyPost.com.
  • Prepare for variable shipping fees dependent on package weight and distance between shipping origin and destination.
